There are several types of Maples that are used in stair construction. Hard Maple or Red/Soft Maple are the most common types used. The best example of a use of Hard Maple would be a gymnasium floor. The hardness of this material makes for a product that does not readily accept stains. Most stair products are made with the Red or Soft Maple type of wood. Even though the name suggests that Soft Maple is soft, it is still hard and durable as the Oaks. This product is very common in more Contemporary homes or used, when stained correctly, as a Cherry or sometimes a Walnut substitute. It is very important when staining Maples, and other products like Maple, to use a stain controller as this wood has a tendency to blotch.
