Have you ever wondered what an elliptical staircase is or where it can be used? Most elliptical staircases are found in city homes. During the turn of the century, most city lots were designed to be long and narrow. This created a challenge for a staircase to reach the 2nd and 3rd floors. The available choices were either a very steep, straight staircase that had numerous risers and pie shaped winder treads, or the elliptical stair design. This design allowed for a more curved and graceful flow.

A true elliptical stair does not have a single radius point, but multiple radius points. This creates a stretched out circular look. All the treads in an elliptical stair are different. This is the reason for the difficulty of manufacturing this type of staircase.
